I have chosen to explore the history of fashion for my final major project. Mainly because I enjoy the style of fashion photography the most and I believe that I will be able to produce high quality work.

On my previous projects I have experimented with different types of lighting, this will be something I will experiment with again to create and represent the different time eras. I would like for my final images to be black and white, editing in black and white is something that I have done before and has been successful.

I have named my final major project ‘Fashion through the decades.’ It will include a collection of images that represent fashion of different periods of time, from the 20s to the 90s. My final images will demonstrate how fashion has evolved through these decades.

The main technique that I will be taking into consideration on each shoot will be the use of lighting. This is because I believe that the lighting used will affect what period of time my images are conveying. For example, a softer light will create a more vintage look for the 20s.

I will be shooting every image for this project in the lighting studio, shooting in the studio will allow me to produce high quality work. It will also indicate that they are fashion and portrait images. I plan to have a different model for each shoot, I will only be shooting women as they are the main focus of my project. As for props and costumes, the model will be dressed in clothes styled to the appropriate decade and have one or two props to also demonstrate the decade. Research has helped me to understand how to style the model for each shoot, an example of this is a cigarette holder for the 20s, or pearl jewelry for the 50s.

In our previous project we were given the opportunity to choose a genre of photography to explore. I chose fashion photography, from this I knew that I wanted to carry on taking fashion styled images as this is my favourite thing to do. We recently watched a documentary featuring fashion photographer, Rankin. In this documentary Rankin recreated seven famous fashion images that he believed changed the fashion industry. This documentary highly inspired my project. I find the history of fashion extremely interesting and would love to create my own images that represent this.

Firstly, I will know that I am successful when I have met deadlines and completed tasks on time. I will also know that I am successful when my images are of a certain standard.

If my project was to have a target audience I believe that it would be a whole range of people. From younger people like me who are interested in fashion and are curious about its history, to older people who have seen fashion evolve.

Throughout this project I will design a new blog and update it each week with anything I have completed. This includes research, photoshoots, evaluations, and any feedback I receive from staff and peers.

For the summer show in June I would like to exhibit a range of my final images. My idea is to print them no bigger than A3 and frame them. They will be on display in order, from the oldest decade to the newest.
