1930’s – first shoot research

Jean Harlow

Jean is remembered from her platinum blonde bob (which inspired thousands to get a cut in a similar fashion), rosebud lips and arched eyebrows as well as her clothing and acting ability.

Vivien Leigh

Vivien was not only known for her on-screen success – she won two Oscars for Best Actress – but also her off-screen wardrobe. One of Vivien’s favourites, Dior would later redefine the way women dressed during the decade of 1950s fashion, known as the ‘New Look’.

Ginger Rogers

Ginger was known for her constantly changing hair. Straight, wavy, sleek bobs and classic up-dos; Ginger wore them all. She left her distinct mark on 1930s fashion with her super sleek gowns, which showed off her enviable figure.

Each of these iconic women will be inspirational for my first shoot.

Lighting;

As for the lighting set up, it will be similar to the set up that I use for the 20s style shoot. The Hollywood glamour style of George Hurrell will inspire me for this shoot. Through research, I have found examples of lighting set ups which have been used to achieve work similar to George Hurell’s.

The portraits were typically black-and-white and hi-contrast. The hair and skin highlights were blown-out and the shallow depth-of-field created a dreamy, out-of-focus background. Because I will be taking my images in the studio, I will have the ability to recreate images like these with complete control of the lighting.
